LESSON PLANS / CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES

Earth Observatory Experiments ('E' 'M' 'H')
NASA's interactive experiments that can be used to teach all ages about the art and science of space-based Remote Sensing. The experiments focus on how NASA uses Remote Sensing to study how and why Earth changes. It covers such topics as earthquakes, weather, biomes, patterns of change, ICE (Image Composite Editor), and much more.

Earth Science Activities ('E' 'M')
A collection of hands-on activities with easy to obtain materials. Produced by teachers and sponsored by Flynn Scientific.
Teacher resources: www.flinnsci.com/Sections/EarthSci/ESactivities.asp

Earth Science Lessons ('E' 'M')
Lessons appropriate for 3rd-8th grade students. Lessons are organized by subjects, including plate tectonics, ancient geological history, and the physical properties of different rocks and minerals.
Teacher resources: volcano.und.nodak.edu/vwdocs/vwlessons/lessons/lesson.html

EarthNet ('M' 'H')
A variety of good lesson plans, activities, and background information for teachers are included here at this Geological Survey of Canada Web site.

Learning from the Fossil Record ('E' 'M' 'H') (Standards)
An excellent collection of activities designed to help students behave as scientists, interpreting the past though fossil records. All correlated to the National Science Standards. By various authors under the auspices of the University of California, Berkeley.
Teacher resources: www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/fosrec/

Learning Web ('E' 'M' 'H')
Collection of lesson plans compiled by the US Geological Survey, including map-related activities, volcanoes, and plate tectonics.
Teacher resources: interactive2.usgs.gov/learningweb/teachers/index.htm

Planetary Geology ('M' 'H')
"NASA's educator's guide (downloadable) that features exercises grouped into five units: 1) introduction to geologic processes, 2) impact cratering activities, 3) planetary atmosphere, 4) planetary surfaces, and 5) geologic mapping."
Teacher resources: spacelink.nasa.gov/products/Planetary.Geology/

Science and Technology Lesson Plans ('E' 'M' 'H')
The Smithsonian has an extensive lesson plan database for teachers. Search by subject, grade level and/or keyword(s). You will sometimes be directed to other web sites for the plans.

Virtual Field Trip to Nova Scotia ('M' 'H')
The rugged terrain of Canada is a reflection of why that country is a geologist's paradise. This site takes you above the landscapes of Nova Scotia in a helicopter. As a bonus, in addition to learning about geology you get a little human history from the region as well!
