HISTORY

History Topics ('H')
A good collection of mathematical topics plus 'mathematics in various cultures.'  By the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Fibonacci Numbers and the Golden Section ('H')
The famous Fibonacci series appears again and again in nature and is related to the Golden Section, which appears again and again in art and architecture. This site explores the history behind the series and the man who loaned his name to it.

MacTutor History of Mathematics Archive ('H')
An excellent resource on the history of thought behind mathematics. By the University of St. Andrews, Scotland.

Mayan Math ('E' 'M')
A brief exploration of the Mayan counting system based on 3 symbols.

The Proof ('H')
Fascinating look at mathematician Andrew Wiles' pursuit of a proof for Fermat's Last Theorem, one of the most famous of all (until recently) unsolved mathematical concepts. Created as a supplement for the science television series NOVA--but you don't need to have seen the show to enjoy and utilize this site (in fact, a complete transcript of the program resides here). The interview with Wiles is particularly enlightening, and is an inspiring illustration of perseverance.
