TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION - CAMS

Introduction
While CAMS are certainly not a usual topic (unless in technology class), they are a wonderful innovation which allows a class to view some subject almost anywhere in the world. We thought they deserved special recognition at this point in internet history.

Live cams are subject to a number of factors (e.g., nocturnal animals, viewing hours set by the facility, different time zones, ...) so it is best to check ahead or class time will be spent hunting. Then again, be prepared that things can change at a moment's notice. Connections are important, with faster being better.  Many CAMS have archived their past viewings, so check for this in our description. Many times you will be more rewarded by viewing a series of annotated archived cams than the current one. The Nest Box Cam (see below) is a good example of this. Enjoy and learn.

Bird Boxes - Cams ('E' 'M' 'H')
Catch this site live during nesting/fledging time. Otherwise, you can view descriptive archives and see the progression all at once. From a nature/camera seller in the UK.

Critter Cams ('E' 'M' 'H')
From Animal Planet and the Discovery Channel, live cams.

Fisheye View Camera ('E' 'M' 'H')
Stunning color views from a living reef aquarium featuring corals, invertebrates and tropical fish with live views, archived images, time-lapse movies and more...  Online since December, 1994, the Fisheye View Cam is used by marine researchers to study coral behaviors at Fisheye View labs in Coral Gables, Florida. View photos, streaming video, and many time-lapse movies which reveal the secret life of corals.

Monterey Bay Aquarium ('E' 'M' 'H')
Resources for teachers and students, online-related activities, 6 live web cams with archives.

Nest Box Cam(era) ('E' 'M' 'H')
Look inside an actual nest box to watch nest building through fledging. Watch real-time as well as daily annotated movie archives of the same nest. As the site explains, "The Nest Box Cams use real-time Internet technology to observe and interpret the nesting behaviors of cavity-nesting birds and promote understanding of their breeding biology." One of the best uses of web cameras that we have seen. By the Birdhouse Network/Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

RatCAM ('E' 'M' 'H')
These are pet rats and you can learn a lot about them (and wild rats) from the link on this CAM page. By the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. www.omsi.edu/visit/life/lab/ratcam/

SalmonCAM ('E' 'M' 'H')
The OMSI SalmonCam is provided by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry in Portland, Oregon. Good quality viewing. Want to bring it all to your class? The site provides an information resource for raising Salmon in your classroom.
