ENGINEERING

Biomimetics: Taking a Page from Mother Nature  ('M' 'H') (Standards)
Learn how researchers at Georgia Tech are stealing ideas from nature and applying them to engineering.
www.ceismc.gatech.edu/gazette/2005_11/2005_11_biomimic.aspx

A Chat with Guidant Corporation's Deborah Kilpatrick ('H') (Standards)
This interview reveals how a girl growing up in a small town in Georgia went on to get an engineering degree, designed turbines for top secret fighter jets, and settled into her current position as Director of Research and Technology at Guidant Corporation. www.ceismc.gatech.edu/gazette/2006_01/2006_01_kilpatrick.aspx

Dr. Mulalo Doyoyo: from Apartheid to Engineering  ('M' 'H') (Standards)
Before Dr. Doyoyo became a civil and environmental engineer at Georgia Tech, he experienced the harsh realities of life under apartheid, and then the end of that regime. Now he is giving back to his country of origin by using his skills as an engineer. These video interviews are in Windows Movie format.

Engineer It!  ('E' 'M') (Standards)
As the site says, "you will use the same steps as an engineer to design boats, build bridges, windmills, and airplanes and then test their performance in water tanks, shake tables, and wind tunnels. Experiment with your design and test it again to see what happens. ... introduce your students to the process of experimentation and problem solving. Each component is designed around an engineering challenge that encourages you to Think, Build, Test, and Do It Again."  Correlated to standards/benchmarks. By the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

Engineering for Earthquakes ('M' 'H')
Learn from Seismic Engineering Specialists just what they do to minimize the effects of an earthquake on buildings and highways.

Engineering is Elementary -- Engineering & Technology Lessons For Children ('E') (Standards)
From the Museum of Science, lesson plans that integrate an elementary school science topic with a specific field of engineering. Each unit is designed to engage students in the engineering design process. The lessons include a storybook that introduces basic engineering content and related science content and highlights engineering activities that children will do. Duplication masters, background information also provided. Correlated to national educational standards.

How Stuff Works - Engineering ('E' 'M' 'H')
Students learn about the many applications of engineering -- from atom smashers to bowling pinsetters, and beyond.

JETS: Junior Engineering Technical Society ('H')
An informational website that helps to open the world of engineering and high-technology careers to young people. Lots to offer here for checking out these careers. Focused primarily on secondary schools, JETS seeks to increase college enrollment in these careers, with an emphasis on diversity to include women and minority students. JETS is a non-profit organization that sponsors many programs and events each year. Find the JETS program in your state!

Massachusetts Curriculum for Pre-Engineering ('E' 'M' 'H') (Standards)
As the first state to require K-12 to include engineering concepts in its curriculum, this site provides invaluable lesson plans and activities from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. "The activities available on the site are linked to the new Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Frameworks. Many of the standards in these frameworks are closely related to the nationally recommended standards for technological literacy by the International Technology Education Association (ITEA)."
