AP Calculus Tutoring Program Overview

We are piloting a new tutoring program within the CEISMC Mentoring Program- the AP Calculus Tutoring Program.  Georgia Tech tutors will be working with AP Calculus classes in various Atlanta Public School High Schools. Tutors will travel to schools and work with AP teachers and students with the goal of improving scores on the AP Exams in May.

Qualifications for Becoming an AP Calculus Tutor:

  • Must be a current Georgia Tech student in good standing

The program is open to all full-time graduate and undergraduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

  • Must have transportation or be willing to use public transportation

You will be traveling off-campus to school locations.  Most of the schools we work with are a 15-30 minute drive or 30- 45 minute MARTA ride.  Many of our tutors use public transportation or carpool with other tutors.

  • Must be dependable and reliable

Your commitment to the program and to the students you work with is crucial.  If you are simply looking for an easy job, please do not apply here.  We need people who will stay committed to the program throughout the academic year.  Because you are working with high school students, you will be taking on a more serious responsibility.  Dependability and reliability are they key components we look for in potential tutors.

  • Excellent Communication Skills

It is important that you have outstanding communication skills for this position.  This includes the ability to teach effectively mathematical concepts as well as the ability to talk to and develop a relationship with the students you work with.

  • Completion of Calculus I and II (Math 1501 and 1502) or their equivalents with at least a B in both courses

  • Preference given to those having taken AP Calculus (AB or BC) in high school and scored 4 or better on the exam.

  • Preference given to Math, Science, or Engineering Majors (but all majors will be considered)

  • Availability to work around 5-10 hours during the weekdays from 8 AM - 12 PM.

Benefits of Being a CMP AP Calculus Tutor:

  • Excellent salary

The current salary for tutors is $10/hour.  You will be paid for time spent tutoring, training, preparing lessons, and traveling to and from the school.

  • Paid Training

There is both an initial training session before assigning you to a school as well as periodic follow-up sessions throughout the semester.  Training is required for your employment, and you are paid for the time spent in training.

  • Paid Travel and Prep Time

Because you are traveling off-campus, you are paid your normal salary rate ($10/hour) for the time spent traveling to and from Georgia Tech to your assigned school.  We will also compensate you for prep time to help you prepare for your tutoring sessions.
