Job Information
Qualifications for Becoming a
Tutor:
The program is open to
all full-time graduate
and undergraduate
students with a minimum
GPA of 2.0. All
Kids Count is open to
Georgia Tech students
only. All other
programs are open to all
college students.
First-semester Freshman
will be considered, but
it is preferred to have
completed at least one
semester.
You will be traveling
off-campus to school
locations. Most of the
schools we work with are
a 15 minute drive or 30
- 45
minute MARTA ride from
Georgia Tech's campus.
Many of the schools we
work with are in
economically depressed
areas of the city.
It is important that you
have outstanding
communication skills for
this position. This
includes the ability to
teach effectively
mathematical concepts as
well as the ability to
talk to and develop a
relationship with the
students you work with.
While we do not require
previous tutoring or
teaching experience, it
is helpful (even if this
is just helping your
little brother or sister
with their homework!).
A strong desire to work
with children in our
surrounding community is
all that is necessary
for this position.
Benefits
of Being a CMP Tutor:
The current salary for
new tutors is $10/hour.
This includes time spent
tutoring, training, and
traveling to and from
the school. Some of our
tutors are paid through
the Federal Work Study
program, but we also
hire tutors outside of
work-study. For more
information on the
work-study procedure,
see the Application
Process Page. NOTE FOR
GRADUATE STUDENTS:
These positions do not
offer assistantships or
tuition waivers.
There is both an initial
training session (~8
hours) before
assigning you to a
school as well as
mandatory monthly
training sessions. Training is
required for your
employment, and you are
paid for the time spent
in training.
Because you are
traveling off-campus,
you are paid your normal
salary rate ($10/hour)
for the time spent
traveling to and from
Georgia Tech to your
assigned school.
You are in complete
control of your
schedule. You choose
when you want to tutor
as well as how many
hours and commit to this
schedule for the
semester. Tutors are
required to work a
minimum of 5 hours and
no more than 20 hours
per week. It's up to you
how many hours you would
like to work! Keep in
mind, however, that your
schedule is based upon
what hours the schools
are in session (some
have after school
programs and Saturday
academies). Also, you
are not required to work
during official Georgia
Tech holidays or over
semester breaks.
This is perhaps the
greatest reward for most
of our tutors.
Inspiring a child to
succeed in school is a
benefit that simply
cannot be put into
words. Many tutors who
are initially unsure
about tutoring children
finish the school year
eager to continue.
