Programs
All
programs under the CEISMC Mentoring
Program operate with a similar goal: to
provide tutors and mentors for schools
in the Atlanta area. In general,
tutors and mentors are assigned to
particular students and are asked to assist
them with their studies. In
general, the tutor will work with
individual students or a small group of
students.
The idea is for tutors and mentors to work with the
same children throughout the academic
year in order to forge a strong
"learning partnership". As such, the
ultimate goal is for the tutors and
mentors to
provide both academic and mentoring
support- which is why they are called
tutors AND mentors. The following
descriptions will highlight some of the
differences and similarities among the
programs:

All
Kids Count in Atlanta is a program that
seeks to improve mathematics education
in the Atlanta Public School System. A
part of the "America Counts" national
program, All Kids Count works
with elementary, middle and high schools.
Utilizing Georgia Tech Federal Work-Study students,
the
program provides assistance for “at
risk” students requiring remedial help
and “high achieving” students who can
benefit from mathematical explorations
beyond their classroom experiences.
One
important objective is to help students
in these grades prepare for their
standardized tests taken in the spring. This year we will work
with Carver High School, Centennial Place
Elementary, Fickett Elementary, Herndon Elementary,
Kennedy Middle and Therell High School.
Tutoring takes place at the school
locations mostly during the school
day (8AM - 3PM). There is also an option
to work with students on Saturday during
a weekly half-day Saturday Academy (~9
AM - 12 PM). First semester
freshman are encouraged to participate
in the Saturday Program as it is an opportunity
to introduce yourself to tutoring
without a significant commitment to the
program.
All Kids Count tutors
work on a one-on-one
basis, small group basis and also
provide assistance inside the classroom. Tutors will receive training
on building a relationship with a
student, teaching skills, learning
styles, and cultural considerations.

The high school juniors and seniors chosen for the Pathways into STEM Program are
paired with a college mentor for a 1:1 enrichment and
tutorial sessions during the school day each week.
In addition to mentoring sessions, students participating
in the program meet weekly after school
to attend classes and
acquire skills that will translate into success at the
post-secondary level. The afterschool projects
include building a VEX Robot, developing a service
project and preparing for college and scholarship
applications.
