Programs
All
programs under the CEISMC Mentoring
Program operate with a similar goal: to
provide tutors and mentors for schools
in the Atlanta area. In general,
Georgia Tech tutors are assigned to
particular students and are asked to assist
them with their studies. In
general the tutor will work with
individual students or a small group of
students.
The idea is for tutors to work with the
same children throughout the academic
year in order to forge a strong
"learning partnership". As such, the
ultimate goal is for the tutors to
provide both academic and mentoring
support- which is why they are called
tutors AND mentors. The following
descriptions will highlight some of the
differences and similarities among the
programs:
All
Kids Count in Atlanta Math Tutoring
Program (AKC)
Program Manager:
Taneisha Lee
All
Kids Count in Atlanta is a program that
seeks to improve mathematics education
in the Atlanta Public School System. A
part of the "America Counts" national
program, All Kids Count in Atlanta works
with elementary, middle and high schools.
Utilizing Federal Work-study students
the
program provides assistance for “at
risk” students requiring remedial help
and “high achieving” students who can
benefit from mathematical explorations
beyond their classroom experiences.
One
important objective is to help students
in these grades prepare for their
standardized tests taken in late
spring. This year we will work
with Bethune Elementary, Centennial Place
Elementary, Herndon Elementary, E. Rivers Elementary,
Kennedy Middle, Sylvan Hills Middle School, South
Atlanta High School and Therell High School.
Tutoring takes place at the school
locations during the school
day (8AM - 3PM) All Kids Count tutors
work on a one-on-one
basis or a small group basis. Tutors will receive training
on building a relationship with a
student, teaching skills, learning
styles, and cultural considerations.
Pathways into Science,
Mathematics, Engineering and Technology (SMET)
School Coordinators:
Teresa Canty,
Jewell Foster
Program Coordinator:
Taneisha Lee
The Pathways into Science, Mathematics, Engineering and
Technology (SMET) program has three components:
Mentoring, Tutoring and After-school Clubs.
All components will take place at The New Schools at
Carver in the Atlanta Public School System. There will
be approximately 200 students participating in the
tutoring program and 150 students participating in
the mentoring program.
Mentors will work one-on-one with 9th through
11th grade students and
will assist them primarily in building character and
life skills. They also assist with academic
classes as needed. Mentors meet with their students once a
week during
the school day. Mentors will also interact with
students in monthly recreational activities and
Saturday activities at Georgia Tech.
Academic Day tutors will work with 9th
through 11th
grade students in Algebra 1, Biology or Geometry.
Support will be provided in a small group with between a
1:1 and 1:3 ratio and tutors will work with the same
students throughout the school year. Tutoring
takes place during the school day.
Students will also have the option of participating in
clubs sponsored and facilitated by Georgia Tech
students.
Currently
there is a Chess Club, Health Occupation Students of
America, Digital Media and Robotics
(FIRST and LEGO). Clubs meet
at lease once a week for 1.5 hours
after school.
