The words and photographs that follow are by Steven King, an elementary school teacher who had the great good fortune to travel to Costa Rica in the summer of 2008 as part of his GIFT experience. GIFT is a summer work experience program that allows teachers to get down and dirty exploring the worlds outside of their classroom. If you are a Georgia science, mathematics, or technology teacher, you may want to consider applying for GIFT in 2009. :-)

"I am Steven King. I am the Connections Learning Lab teacher at Whit Davis Elementary School in Athens, Georgia. I worked with the University of Georgia Department of Entomology and accompanied them on an entomology and ornithology class in Costa Rica.

While in Costa Rica I studied the ecosystems there, watched and identified birds, and collected insects. We traveled extensively throughout the country, visiting different regions. This program allowed me to bring back unique cultural experiences of Costa Rica and to be able to share with my students about the many things I saw and studied. I was able to document my trip with over 3,000 digital pictures that can be used in my instruction."
