| In this environmental science program, students will
design a solution to a problem facing the town of
Wamego. Generations of residents have worked the town's
farms and enjoyed the outdoor activities and recreation
available to this quaint community along the banks of
the Crystal River. A large industry would like to move
their plant to Wamego. The plant would mean jobs and
economic stability, but the town is worried about
environmental effects. Using
some of the practices and skills employed by ecologists
and working with other students, participants
learn about food chains and webs, macroinvertebrate
sampling, water
quality testing, and the effect of human activity on
ecosystems.
Other topics include ecosystems, biomes, photosynthesis,
cell respiration, and the classification of living
things. Participant teams work together to design and
present a solution to help Wamego make a good decision.
This program is offered in partnership with the Society for Science
& the Public, the Georgia Department of Education, and the
Caterpillar Foundation. |

| Grab a pair of examination gloves, and get ready to
explore one of the fastest growing and most exciting
fields in science – Forensics Science. During this week
students dive into forensics, learning through case
studies, mock crime scenes, and hands-on lab work.
Students will learn and explore traditional
fingerprinting, blood splatter patterns, DNA
fingerprinting, and many other techniques used in real
crime investigation. The week will culminate with a mock
crime scene investigation – a realistic mystery to
solve! This program is offered in partnership with the Society for Science & The Public and the Caterpillar Foundation. The School of Chemistry and the Department of Biomedical Engineering also provide support. |

| If you have experience with the animation/programming
software Scratch and Alice and are yearning for more, than this
is the program for you. In this program you will go beyond the
basics to create more complex animations and games. The development
of interactive media is a growing field and here you will begin to
explore the excitement of animation. This program is offered in partnership with the College of Computing and the Institute for Computing Education. Visit: http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/915 for more information and pictures. You must return here to apply to this program. (Prior to February 12th, this program was listed as "Digital Media Experience", and those applications will be honored.) |

| You
have arrived at the competition, and the arena is
packed. In one corner the stage is set, and the dancers
are set to begin their performance. They spin, twist,
and move with grace and flair. Meanwhile in another
corner of the arena, a search and rescue team is looking
for victims and attempting to bring them to safety. The
competition is fierce for all teams in this arena, but
what kind of competition is this? Dancing AND Search
and Rescue? This competition is for creative designers
in robotics, and they are all looking to win the prize
of RoboCup champion. These are just two of the events at
RoboCup Jr. which is an international competition that
was held at Georgia Tech in the summer of 2007. In this program you
will build and program LEGO NXT robots for an end of week
competition that is similar to the RoboCup Jr world
competition. |

| The Astronaut Cadet program will use space travel and
astronaut training to excite and educate students in the
fields of math, science and technology. Students will
learn what it takes to have the “right stuff” and will
develop teamwork, self-confidence and communication as
they strive to earn their astronaut wings.
Students will learn about Newton's Laws through the
construction of rocket racers, explore chemical
reactions as they create fizzy rockets, and learn to
calculate altitudes as they build and launch Estes Model
rockets. Students will also explore the Space
Shuttle and International Space Station, sample and
evaluate space food, learn about living and working in
space, and discover new information about our future
efforts to explore the moon and Mars. This program
is offered in partnership with the Society for Science & The Public
and the Caterpillar Foundation. |

Would you like to be the director of a movie?
In this class you will learn how to control the characters in your
movie and how they interact using specialized animation software.
You can control the camera angles. You can even create a 3D game
with the software in this program. Alice is free software from
Carnegie Mellon University that will let you make 3D movies and
games. Would you like to build and program LEGO robots that can play
music, navigate a course on the floor, dance, follow a black line,
avoid obstacles, push objects out of a ring, and play tag? The class
will also let you explore robotics and the critical role programming
plays in robotics.

| Adventures in Animation is a hands-on program that
allows participants to combine art, engineering, and
computer science to create dynamic productions.
Participants will experience the excitement of
controlling electronic devices using the Pico Cricket
kit that makes music and tests reaction time by
programming the kit to interact with the user. Later in
the week, students will us a free software package
called Scratch to create their own animated movie or
interactive game. The program will conclude with a
student showcase when participant’s parents can visit
and view the different projects that the students worked
on during the program. This program is offered in partnership with the College of Computing and the Institute for Computing Education. Visit: http://coweb.cc.gatech.edu/ice-gt/915 for more information and pictures. You must return here to apply to this program. |
