Sirocus Barnes joined Georgia Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing (CEISMC) in March 2012 as the Outreach Coordinator for the AmeriCorps Academic Mentoring Program. Sirocus attended Valdosta State University (VSU) where he earned a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology & Counseling and a Masters in Public Administration with a concentration in Human Resource Management.
Currently, Sirocus is the Director for the Horizons Program at Georgia Tech. Horizons at Georgia Tech is a transformational, community-centered, education program that puts underserved children on a path to success in school and life. This is accomplished through providing a high-quality learning experience outside of the traditional school year to students in math and reading during the summer months to prevent the “summer slide.” Additionally, support is offered to the students and their families during the school year.
Prior to joining CEISMC, Sirocus worked for 10 years for the City of Valdosta and the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority. From 2006 to 2012, Sirocus served as the Programs and Events Coordinator. In this role, Sirocus managed all aspects of four divisions: After-school Programming, Summer Day Camps, Instructional Programming, and Community Special Events. Currently, Sirocus is able to combine his personal and professional interests at CEISMC.
Active in the local community, Sirocus serves as the President of the VSU Alumni Chapter of Atlanta, while also serving on the VSU Alumni Association Executive Board as the VP for Chapters North. Sirocus also serves as the Director of Education for the Georgia District of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated and Chairman of the VSU Alpha Phi Alpha Memorial Scholarship Endowment.
